Black Spruce Tree Branch Black Spruce is a small lance shaped evergreen tree that grows 5-30m tall and is used for pulp and fuel. The Black Spruce can live up to 200 years being prolific seed producers after 10 years. The cones hang down and may stay on the tree for over 20 years.Lower branches that touch the ground can develop roots and send up shoots in a process called ‘layering’ which produces small colonies around parent plants.

Black spruce cones release their seeds when heated and can therefore repopulate abundantly after a fire.
